Disposition:
• Adventurous: From the moment we are introduced to Riku in the first game we know that he craves adventure and excitement. Growing up on a small island that he finds boring leads him to developing a strong desire to leave, and he tries to see this through by enlisting the help of his two best friends, Sora and Kairi, in building a raft. It is this same desire to leave his island that ultimately drives him to open the door to darkness that consumes the Destiny Islands. While his adventurous spirit is in part what kick starts the journey of the first game, it also brings danger to his island and its inhabitants. At its worst, his need for adventure can compel him to be reckless, both with himself and others. But at its best, it is one of the traits that makes him well suited to being a Keyblade Master. There’s nothing he loves more then visiting new worlds and learning new things.
• Competitive: Riku grows up with a reputation of being unbeatable in most athletic pursuits, such as fighting with wooden swords and racing. This, naturally, causes him to develop a severe competitive streak and the expectation that he’ll be the best at whatever he tries. In early canon this causes him to butt heads with Sora, who he sees as being in competition with him over the Keyblade. Throughout the series Riku’s competitive streak gets tempered as he learns how to share the spotlight and be a more supportive friend. While he still enjoys participating in competition, he no longer feels like he has to be the best, or that no one else is allowed to be better. He becomes openly supportive of both Sora and Kairi as they pursue their Keyblade training, even stating that he believes in Sora’s strength.
• Confident: Riku has strong leadership skills and is comfortable filling in the leadership role when necessary. Growing up, he was the de-facto leader of his friend group, often deciding what they would do, what games they would play, and where they would explore. From this he learned how to make quick decisions and got used to being listened to. Having people follow him, rely on him, made him develop strong confidence in his own decision-making. Once he’s made up his mind, Riku isn’t the type to easily second-guess himself. However, his confidence can sometimes leak over into overconfidence, making him prone to leaping into situations without a second thought, or lacking all of the needed information. When he finds out he can use the power of waking to travel to the world where Sora is, he immediately opens the gateway without bothering to gather more information about this unfamiliar, potentially dangerous world from the present spirit who was born there.
• Loyal: Riku cherishes his close friendships and will do everything he can for someone he cares about. Even at his worst in early canon, part of what motivates Riku to turn to the darkness and Maleficent’s tutelage is his desire to save Kairi’s heart and return it to her body. Even as his friendship with Sora fractures, his desire to save Kairi keeps him anchored. When Sora needs to sleep for a year in order to have his memories restored, Riku spends that time working behind the scenes to ensure that Sora is able to wake up again unhindered. He goes so far as to give into his darkness further, despite his own fears, just so he can gain the power to fight Xion and Roxas, both of whom he needs to return to Sora’s heart. He’s not afraid to sacrifice himself for the sake of his loved ones, going as far as to jump in the way of direct hits to protect his friends in battle. The reverse side of this is that he’s willing to go so far for his loved ones that he tends not to care if he has to use or hurt others in order to do what he has to. He helps trap Roxas in the digital Twilight Town for a year to ensure that he returns to Sora’s heart, viewing him more as a piece of Sora than a person in his own right.
Under pressure: As far as ending up in a strange world goes, Riku is used to that. He won’t have any trouble coping with the unfamiliar, because it’s something he’s had to deal with to an extent for every world he’s traveled to before. What he won’t be used to is having an unclear goal and unknown enemies. As a Keyblade Master he’s used to protecting worlds through feats of strength against entities of darkness that he can recognize and knows how to defeat. Having to investigate and slowly bring the mysteries of this world to light will be frustrating for him, especially because he will now have new limits placed on his abilities. Ultimately, he will be interested in helping the planet however he can, as that is his job. On the bright side, he loves adventure and learning new things, so being in a place surrounded by others from different worlds will definitely excite him and prompt him to learn as much as he can about these other worlds in pursuit of new skills and knowledge. Bodily transformations are not unfamiliar to him, as Keyblade wielders often take on a form that helps them fit into the world they travel to, but this will be Riku’s first time having to deal with such consist transformations.
Condition upon arrival: He’ll arrive in perfect health and physical condition.
Abilities:
Keyblade: Riku’s weapon and main source of power. It can cast magic as well as deal out physical damage. It’s wielded in battle like a sword and is capable of cutting down enemies despite not always having a sharp edge, depending on the form it takes. Riku can summon it into his hand at will, and if knocked from his hand it will disappear until he re-summons it. NERF: He will lose the ability to open doors to other worlds with his Keyblade.
• Swordsmanship
• Agility: A lot of Riku’s physical attacks in-game require him to charge enemies, leap through the air, and execute blade strikes with accuracy, sometimes multiple strikes in quick succession.
• Strength: He’s capable of launching enemies into the air and is adept at fighting multiple enemies at one time. He’s able to split a building into pieces with a strike of his Keyblade. NERF: While he’ll still be able to deal out property damage, it will take significantly more effort and mana. Instead of being able to destroy a whole building, at max strength he’ll be able to do significant damage to one floor of a multi-story building (with permission).
• Speed: While not speedster fast, Riku can move faster than an average person to the extent that his movements can be hard for the eye to follow.
• Magic: Riku can use a variety of magic attacks with his Keyblade. Many of these are elemental based: shooting flames/fireballs and ice crystals, freezing enemies, summoning lightning, releasing poison bubbles at enemies, etc. NERF: The spell Curaga is a healing spell that canonly restores part of Riku’s health. For the purposes of the game it will only be able to heal minimal wounds and injuries such as scratches, minor cuts, and sprains.
Darkness: Riku is able to tap into the darkness of his heart, allowing him to use a series of dark-based abilities. He can use his darkness to charge himself up, summon fireballs of darkness, produce shields and barriers of dark energy, transform into a shadow, allowing him to pass through enemy attacks, and summon blades of dark energy into his hands to attack with. NERF: Rather than run off the darkness of his heart, these abilities will need a high level of mana in order to be used.
Hand-to-hand: While limited, Riku has basic hand-to-hand skills, allowing him to dodge, strike, block, and even grab onto his opponent when he’s weaponless.
